diptychs

Studio photography

What is a diptych? Diptychs, is a style most commonly seen in art where two pieces are put together to create balance. The two pieces may be similar, but must be distinct enough to evoke a feeling that a piece alone wouldn't be able to.

In this explorative photoseries, the dyptich created pushes a narrative of gender norms and the genderization of colours. It is a general understanding in western cultures that pink is feminine and blue is masculine, therefore instead of pairing this pink portrait with its complementary colour, green, the blue is a more effective colour choice. The model doesn’t have any defining male or female features, however the pink shades may persuade the viewer that the model is a girl. The portrait uses both a soft box and a beauty dish to get bright, consistent lighting that shows softness, and the model’s expression and warm skin tone follows this narrative as well. The abstract image shares the same simplicity as the portrait. While the subject matter is unknown, the movement of the abstract image resembles the dynamics of the model’s posture.

Fun fact: This was shot during Covid when we could only be in direct contact with family members so the model was my sister!!
